Modern Foreign Languages
At Waingroves Primary School, our intent is to develop a love of languages through the delivery and participation of an interactive, practical and engaging curriculum to inspire pupils to want to learn further languages later on in their education and lives for pleasure. It is our ambition for our pupils to acquire the knowledge and vocabulary required in a different language to build the foundations to have the ability and confidence needed to communicate across different countries independently. We aim to provide out pupils with the opportunity to appreciate and learn about different cultures to inspire pupil’s curiosity to explore the world and give them the drive to want to travel, study or work in other countries. Pupils will learn to communicate in a variety of ways effectively to give them an insight and analyse different cultures and values. Pupils will develop a curiosity and understanding of the wider world.
Our MFL curriculum is delivered using the French language. Our lessons are planned and taught in sequence to ensure that prior learning is considered and that there are opportunities for aspects of language and grammar to be revised. Due to this structure, children are able to build on prior knowledge alongside the introduction of new skills, ensuring clear progression from lesson to lesson, unit to unit, and year to year. The learning experiences for French are planned to be inclusive, accessible, and meet the needs of all children, including SEND and disadvantaged pupils. The planning of lessons will use of a variety of different resources, the main one being Twinkl scheme of work, to enrich learning experiences, such as those to be used alongside each topic within our scheme of work, in our library they have the opportunity to choose French language books as part of reading for pleasure. Our children are able to learn French through a variety of engaging and enriching learning opportunities.
MFL will be monitored and assessed by class teachers, in line with other Foundation Subjects in our school, therefore impact can be measured to ensure enjoyment and progression of French is clear and continuous. Through using the progressive, sequenced lesson structure, alongside a wealth of resources and learning opportunities, we strive to ensure that the teaching and learning of MFL is enjoyed by all children and will hopefully encourage them to embark on further language studies as they continue on their learning journey.
This is what our children think about their French learning:
