Think. Do. Achieve

Mathematics

At Waingroves Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient, and numerate learners who can apply their mathematical knowledge in a variety of contexts. Our aim is to ensure all pupils develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills, enabling them to become competent mathematicians. We are committed to providing rich problem-solving opportunities to enhance logical thinking and mathematical literacy, and to encourage pupils to think critically and creatively when working with numbers.

Our mathematics curriculum follows the White Rose Maths framework, which provides a structured and progressive approach to mathematical learning, ensuring consistency and progression across all year groups. Lessons incorporate a mastery approach, enabling pupils to build deep understanding through small, sequenced steps.

Key features of our implementation include:

  • Problem-Solving Focus: We prioritise problem-solving opportunities to strengthen pupils' mathematical thinking and application skills.
  • Retrieval Practice: Daily 6-in-6 exercises (see below) help pupils maintain fundamental arithmetic skills, reinforcing prior learning and ensuring fluency in key concepts.
  • Assessment for Learning: We use NFER assessment materials in Years 1, 3, 4, and 5 to track progress and inform teaching. In Year 2 and Year 6, we incorporate past KS1 and KS2 SATs materials to prepare pupils for their statutory assessments.
  • Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) Approach: We ensure pupils develop strong conceptual understanding through the use of concrete manipulatives, pictorial representations, and abstract reasoning.
  • Inclusive and Differentiated Approach: Lessons are adapted to support all learners, ensuring challenge for high achievers while providing scaffolding for those who need additional support.

Those children with Special Educational Needs have their needs met through bespoke and specialist provision, such as Plus 1, Power of Two, Numbers Count and the Dyscalculia Toolkit. We aspire to help all of our children to access the White Rose curriculum at a level appropriate to their point of progress.

Through our carefully structured curriculum and teaching approaches, pupils develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and are well-prepared for future learning. We measure impact through:

  • Live Marking Regular engagement with children through their 6-in-6 exercises and engagement with the White Rose scheme of learning ensures pupils retain and apply key arithmetic skills effectively.
  • Assessment Outcomes: Pupils’ progress is tracked using NFER tests and SATs practice materials, ensuring targeted support where needed.
  • Pupil Confidence and Engagement: Our focus on problem-solving fosters resilience and enjoyment in mathematics, equipping pupils with the skills needed to tackle mathematical challenges in real-world situations.

By the time pupils leave Waingroves Primary School, they will have developed a strong mathematical foundation, preparing them for secondary education and beyond. Our commitment to a problem-solving approach ensures that pupils can confidently apply their mathematical knowledge in a range of contexts, fostering lifelong numeracy skills.
